Breadfruit, Ulu,
Artocarpus altilis 'Ulu' is the Hawaiian word for Breadfruit, and is defined as "To grow, increase, spread; growth; increase or rising of the wind; to protect." One of the first 'canoe" plants the Polynesians brought with them to Hawaii, Breadfruit has played an important role in the health, growth and prosperity of the Hawaiian culture. It is traditionally the first tree a family plants when a newborn enters this world, as it bares fruits that contain the full spectrum of essential nutrients, considered a complete protein, thus inviting abundance, health and prosperity to this new life. Breadfruit is a huge tropical rain-forest fruiting tree in the mulberry family. It is closely related to the other tropical fruits such as jackfruit, figs and breadnut. There are many benefits to the tree through its leaves, seeds, and fruit.
