Lime Balm,
Melissa officinalis ssp. altissima Lime balm is a sister to Lemon Balm, sharing most of the same medicinal qualities. The biggest difference in personality comes through in aroma, where Lime Balm is clearly "lime" in nature and Lemon Balm is "lemony". A hardy perennial with toothed, oval light green leaves and small yellow white flowers. Lime Balm prefers full sun and rich soils. Lime Balm is an effective nervine, nourishing and calming to the nervous system, thus helping conditions of anxiety, sleeplessness and even infections of the nervous system, like shingles, due to its antiviral compounds. Lime Balm works directly with the thyroid, bringing balance to hyperthyroidism. It also has an action on the stomach, helping digest foods and dispel gas. A lovely herb with a positive nature, Lime Balm is strong and gentle in action, well-suited for children and the elderly. It is especially beneficial for overactive children.
