Kava Powder

It is nearly impossible to explore the cultural history of the Pacific Islands without mentioning the enigmatic plant known as kava. Also recognized by its scientific name Piper methysticum, and its many local names, such as 'awa in Hawaii, 'ava in Samoa, and yogana in Tonga, this shrub has played a significant role in the traditions of these regions. Kava is prepared into a frothy, aromatic brew, slightly bitter in taste, and is known for its ability to create a soothing, tranquil state, promoting relaxation and a deep sense of well-being.

This is the first time I know of that Kauai-grown kava has been made commercially available on an international level. The potency of this 'non-noble', type of Tudei (meaning two days of potency), and cultivated variety called Isa, is for real. So please respect this sacred ceremonial root with lots and lots of drinking water, space to rest, and minimal serving sizes until you really get to know it. Steep and strain the powder before consuming it for a lighter experience. Ideally, it is consumed late in the day, as it is best known to help support sleep, stress/anxiety, and restoration.

It is with great honor, gratitude, and humility that we share this sacred Polynesian plant medicine and add its very special healing attributes to the Kauai Farmacy apothecary. Please relax into the ever-deepening and chillin' connection to the roots of Kauai through our newest product - Kauai-grown Kava Powder.

*Kava, like other potent root medicines, will seek to cleanse the liver. For those with sensitive livers or liver issues, seek guidance before communing with kava.

Kava has a distinctive, earthy flavor that might take getting used to. It's traditionally consumed slowly to experience its full effects.

Directions

Easy single serving directions
- mix kava root powder with room temperature water, stir and let rest for 10-15 minutes, then strain.

Here’s a guide for brewing traditional kava:

Materials:
- Powdered Kava root
- Strainer bag (like a muslin or fine mesh cloth)
- Room-temperature water (cold water can also work but avoid hot water)
- Large bowl or pitcher
- A cup for serving

Steps:

1. Measure the kava: Start small. This kava root powder is potent, so we suggest small amounts to begin with.

2. Prepare your water: Fill a large bowl or pitcher with room-temperature water. Cold water can work but avoid using hot water as it destroys the kavalactones (the active compounds in kava).

3. Add kava to the strainer bag: Place the kava powder into the strainer bag or cloth and submerge it into the water.

4. Massage the kava: With the kava in the strainer, knead and squeeze the bag repeatedly to release the kavalactones into the water. This process usually takes about 10-15 minutes. The water should turn a muddy, light brown color.

5. Strain the kava: After massaging, wring out any remaining liquid from the bag into the bowl or pitcher. Discard the used kava root.

6. Serve and enjoy: Pour the strained kava into cups, and it's ready to drink. Kava has a calming, relaxing effect, so it’s often enjoyed in social or peaceful settings.
