Superpowers of Plant Medicine

Superpowers of Plant Medicine

The most energizing, healing, and restorative vitamins and minerals on Earth come from the planet’s most vibrant and flavorful edible plants. In other words, plant medicine grown with intention is the superpower for optimal health. The combination of these super plants along with drinking pure spring water and breathing nourishing, oxygenated air provides the foundation to attract the high-vibe foods, symbiotic human relationships, and restorative environmental experiences. So if it is just that simple, why isn’t everyone doing it? The reason is that it takes education, access, and persistence to achieve this healthier lifestyle.

When we first started drinking fresh herbal tea grown in our landlord’s garden on Kaua‘i, the subtle experience shifted our thoughts, intentions, and diet. The Tulsi calmed our breath, the Mint soothed our nervous system, the Lemon Balm lifted our mood, and the Sage quieted our minds. The chemistry of our blood was becoming less acidic and more alkaline. The plants were clearing toxic blockages in our circulatory system and awakening our body's intuitive tools that had been laying dormant. The increased alkalinity in our blood was helping provide a more positive mindset and a more nutritious diet consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. No longer do we have to struggle and convince our minds of what to eat because we are chemically attracted to healthier alkaline foods (i.e. like attracts like).

It was an awareness that I had never felt before. It was during my athletic teenage years that my potent digestive juices were able to digest a nail, if need be. But as I grew older, my once youthful metabolism began dragging its feet, steadily slowed down, backed-up, and became stagnant. However, with the help of this medicinal herb garden, I learned that just drinking a potent cup of herbal tea could provide the foundation for the health and wellness of my entire being. Slowly but surely the plant medicine detoxed calcified blockages, cleansed my blood, stimulated my circulatory system, and ignited my metabolism. In the process, I was sharpening my mind, heightening my awareness, and bolstering my will-power.

Now, fifteen years later, I have learned to align myself with the superpowers of plant medicine. How you ask? Practice, practice, practice! Learning how to apply plant medicine effectively is a lifetime journey of challenging lessons, commitment, and never-ending self-discovery. So now that my metabolic system has been rejuvenated and I have integrated the plant medicine into my daily life, what does that lifestyle integration actually look like?

I now love drinking an extra-large jar of chilled tea in the fridge, a cup of hot tea in the morning, the honey and tea for my sweet tooth, the iced tea brew as a base in my smoothie, the warm tea for a foot bath, and a floral tea for face-steams. I crave pinches of our green superfoods like Moringa and Bele Spinach for protein and iron-rich smoothies; Turmeric, Ginger, and Curry spice in my salad dressings and on my avocados; and Cinnamon and Allspice in my desserts. I use the uplifting “spirit water” of the plants - that we call hydrosols - to brighten my day and clean my pores, as well as help heal an acute ache, cut, or inflammation. When time allows, I also enjoy massaging and lubricating my entire body with Macadamia Nut-based serums and butters, as well as Coconut beeswax-based salves. For me, this is my happy place, my guaranteed self-love practice. And when it comes to fresh plant medicine, I do not skimp, I do not hoard, and I do not save. The fresher the plants are when they enter our body, and the younger you are when you invite their benefits, the better. So when it comes to anti-aging, time is of the essence.

As we ingest these vitamins and minerals, we become more vibrant and energetic, and we feel the physical, mental, and spiritual connection to the Earth. We learn to trust and honor our collective presence with the planet and its species as one. It is with this consistent practice that the true beneficial superpowers of plant medicine come alive.

Ancient Plant Medicine Revival

Ancient Plant Medicine Revival

As I walk through these jungle medicinal gardens, I first pick and taste the calming, mushroom-flavored, purple vervain flowers. I then try the peppery zest of the ripened all-spice berry, and as the potent flavor heightens my sensory system, my eyes are drawn to the garden floor and the yellow-flowered, supple tarragon bed beneath me. I gently pick some and taste its licorice flavor. Afterwards, I spot some rich, ruby red coffee beans and eagerly pop a few of these fruity antioxidant skins into my mouth. I lean over to waft the calming fragrance of the enchanting Tulsi flower while lightly stepping barefoot on the carpet-like, green ground cover of Self-Heal and Laukahi. I breathe deeply before rubbing the potent antiseptic oils directly from the needle-leaves of the Tea Tree Plant.

An unfathomable experience is unfolding inside me as well as around me. I'm connecting with the flavors, scents, and energies of these ancient tropical plant medicines. Towards the end of my garden journey, I chew on the bark of the cinnamon stick, inspiring a smile on my face. My eyes are then quickly captivated by the vibrant cacao pods and its magnesium-rich, heart-opening energy. The Flora is alive as it oxygenates the air, nourishes the soil beneath it, and hydrates the symbiotic system surrounding it. The gardens are a truly restorative retreat - beginning with the high-vibe intention of the most abundant elements on earth: plants, oxygen, and water.

The Lost Medicine

Since the days of the East India Tea & Spice Company ravaging the Jungle Medicine Gardens of the Spice Islands, so much vital information of plant medicine has been lost. How did the Romans grow and utilize Sage, Rosemary, Lavender, Oregano, Thyme, and more of their storied Mediterranean herbal medicine to strengthen their vast empire? What was so special about the ancient plant medicine of yesteryear that lured hundreds of men from Europe to sail the seas for years on end, hunting for precious tropical spices like Black Pepper, Cinnamon, and Nutmeg to cure its devastating Black Plague?

Why are the most powerful healing plants on the planet not in our everyday culture, hospitals, and healing centers? Where are the Comfrey Casts to heal bones, ligaments and tendons; Noni Juice to circulate blood and kill infections; Turmeric Poultices to reduce toxic inflammation; and Lemon Balm, Rosemary, Sage, Mint Tea to uplift debilitating depression? If true healing is found in the practice of subtle restoration, why are these attested plant medicines not utilized in our everyday culture? The reason is that we don’t have a widespread understanding of the potent healing powers of our planet’s medicine cabinet. What if that was all about to change?

The Permaculture Immune System

We learn through persistent trial and error which plants thrive when planted near one another as optimal companions, ideal symbiotic relationships, and collective immunity. We reconnect with the ancient wisdom of sustainable backyard gardens and the healing benefits of high-efficacy plant medicine within them. The Yarrow befriends the Bacopa to defend the all-critical first layer or “ground cover” of the gardens; Comfrey, Sisso Spinach, and Lemongrass create natural guilds at the knee-high level to protect our garden perimeters; Tulsi, Mamaki, and Pinneaple Sage hold the all-vital, eye-level, shrublike, center space of our unique individual guilds, while Papayas, Moringa, and Pigeon Pea dominate the canopy of our jungle medicine gardens.

The plants create the immune system for our environment and serve as the first line of defense against any and all disease. These longevity-minded perennials effectively act as the closed-loop fertilizers and pesticides, promoting a potent array of anti-fungal, antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, and antiparasitic botanical characteristics intended to defend one another and the environment. An avant-garde yet ancient system that we now refer to as Permaculture is resulting in a healthy balance of our air, water, and environment.

The Ancient Revival

As we plant our communities with more intention, the plants begin to literally have our back. The Hawaiians refer to this connection with the land as Mālama ʻĀina: we take care of the land and plants and they will take care of us. We thrive in this living, breathing, symbiotic immune system that fosters human consciousness and the critical mind-body connection. As we experience the energies of the plants, we gain the insight to revive the ancient wisdom of the Romans, Peruvians, Africans, Chinese, Hawaiians, Indians, and other prosperous native cultures. Communities of people rooted in the practice of sustainable gardening and the knowledge of how to apply plant medicine to Heal Yo’ Self. Imagine if we enjoyed the healing powers in a cup of tea as easily as we do a cup of coffee, glass of milk, can of soda.

Can such an Ancient Plant Medicine Revival help redefine the modern-day health and wellness movement? Economically speaking, the sustainable yield per square foot is unparalleled in nutrient production, operational efficiency, ecosystem sustainability, and medicinal efficacy. Scientifically speaking, the alkalinity of plant medicine indisputably helps ameliorate acidic-toxic disease and simultaneously attracts more alkaline energies to help heal ourselves. It is like a beautiful river attracting scenic natural environments, healthy fisheries, and beautiful birds. Cultivation of intentional plant medicine revives and unifies us with the land, ancestors, water, and wisdom of the collective universal intelligence
Healing - One Cup at a Time

Healing - One Cup at a Time

Small Step - Leap of Action

As I sip my cup of Puritea sweetened with Ginger-infused honey, I reflect on the many projects that our farm has recently taken on in such a short time. After years of contemplation, we curbed our unnerving-hesitation that once paralyzed us from achieving tasks that seemed terribly daunting and overwhelming.

As is the case with our health. As we intentionally shifted our mental focus from the colossal “overall desired outcome” and redirected our intention to a simpler, more digestible approach with a clear focus on what we “could do” right now, things have started to take shape.

Healing Transformation

After removing over 100 invasive trees from the underutilized front pasture, a clearing with extraordinary opportunity remains. A fertile understory ripe for intentional planting awaits seeding as the evenly-spread mulch initiates new garden terrain. As living creatures of mother earth, we too can emulate a cleansing of the invasives and create a similar opportunity for human expansion and growth as it relates to our health. When we cleanse we are removing blockages, stagnancy, undesirable pathogens, and creating flow, circulation, and space to enhance our health. When we think of tackling chronic pain, cancer, or unruly viruses, it can be quite overwhelming. However, we have the power to take action. Without overwhelming ourselves with the “ultimate healing remedy” or the “quick cure” for whatever may be ailing us, we can take action in a more attainable way.

The first step: drink a cup of herbal tea. It may sound simple, but that’s the point, this is the very act that will propel further expansion. Then try to integrate two cups of tea into your daily routine. You may find yourself making more intentional, conscious choices throughout the day as a result. You may find ease where there once was tension. The change will arise differently with different people as we are all unique individuals. However, one thing will be certain; when you introduce herbs into your lifestyle consistently over time, micro-shifts will occur, and opportunity within will emerge.

A Platform for New Growth

There is a beginning with every health journey. A moment. A moment of similar impulsivity that draws us into the realm of conscious choice. It is as simple as drinking that first cup of herbal tea, yet feels so monumental when considered in the greater goal. It is taking that first sip of herbal tea that will produce a positive ripple into your future healing journey when the bigger shifting begins to take place. This is the nature of herbal healing.

As we invite you to join in this journey, we will continue to share with you our story, the story of a small family-owned farm run by passionate gardeners, herbalists, ordinary and extraordinary humans who share in the art of creating the world’s most profound herbal plant medicine without compromise. As we removed the overgrowth, we created a clearing that was much more than a clearing of the aggressive, rampantly invading canopy. It was an opening. A platform for new growth. For expansion. For receiving light, air, and water. For rebirth. For creativity. For intention and future evolution. Our health deserves the same. Let that first cup of tea be a landmark that declares your path in vibrancy, and let the second, third, and beyond cup be the bedrock on which your healing is grounded.

Fine Tune your Health with Precision Herbs

Fine Tune your Health with Precision Herbs

Each and every choice we make determines whether or not we hinder or aid in our own recovery. The feeling of elevating our self-awareness is empowering, self-propelling, and critically aligns us with the cosmos. We slowly but surely learn that this intentional awareness promotes a healthy lifestyle filled with balance and joy.

Within so many aspects of our life professions we ultimately expect nothing less than perfection, or very close to it. We rely on such precision in our day-to-day tasks, whether we are a carpenter, a beautician, an athlete, a lawyer, a technician, or a musician simply fine-tuning his/her instrument. We even make calculated decisions on how we power our cars, meticulously clean our homes, parent our children, and how we communicate and relate to our business colleagues and our loved ones.

Yet, ironically when it comes to the most important aspect of our lives, the very energies (or lack thereof) that we allow to influence bodies, we are anything but precision-based. Why is it that when it comes to our food and drink and medicine choices, our approach and expectation is anything but refined wth the fine-tooth comb that we seem to practice in the rest of our lives?

For every little morsel of “food” we
put in our mouths there is a metaphorical fork in the road. Deep down inside, we all want the gentlest, most fulfilling path. Our
capacity to choose what type of  foods we consume directly and indirectly impacts our ability to self-heal, especially when we are already in a compromised state of health. If we choose to consume alkalizing foods (fresh organic fruits, vegetables, seaweeds, nuts, seeds, and herbs) we encourage healing, improve comfort, and ease ourselves toward more optimal health. With this quintessential intuitive desire, we are fully capable of choosing wisely, with the same impeccable precision we conduct in our daily professions and lives.

We appreciate how difficult it may at first seem to turn
the corner and make such a conscious and deliberate shift toward the betterment of our health through our personal choices. However, it is really super simple. The secret to intercepting our toxic lifestyle choices in exchange for self-awareness requires only one thing – YOU! Let go of everything else and focus on YOU as your number one priority – You can do it! Try it once, then twice, then put it into practice and adopt that Self-Love lifestyle into perpetuity.

Here at Kauai Farmacy, we approach our work with laser-like precision. We are vehemently refining our process, upgrading the nutrients within our close-loop garden system, fine-tuning our herbal craft, and creatively communicating next-level plant medicine education for you and those of like-mind. We artisanally-craft herbal teas, superfood spices, and botanical salves with herbs like Soursop to remove physical blockages in the lower digestive tracts, Lemongrass to scrape toxins throughout the body, Turmeric to reduce acidic inflammation in the liver and throughout the body, Noni to circulate our Qi and cleanse our blood, Tulsi to raise our overall self-awareness, Comfrey to detoxify the calcified matter and regenerate cells, Ginger to ignite our metabolism and cleanse the gall-bladder, and Moringa to nourish our muscles and alkalize the blood (our essential life-force).

When we consistently and intentionally expose our system to diverse, fresh, and high-vitality plant medicine, we open portals in our body that may otherwise lay dormant, thus awakening new life tools. We incorporate Kauai-grown, nutrient dense herbal medicine into our daily existence to calm our senses, communicate intuitive messages, nourish our beings, and simply put…tune-in to fine tune our health with the utmost precision.

Bee-Ing Reminded - The Unpredictable Gifts Of Life

Bee-Ing Reminded - The Unpredictable Gifts Of Life

Bees are a phenomenon.

They provide the world with food and medicine through pollination, honey through a special process using their salivary-glands, beeswax through their brilliant, architectural geometry, and divine intelligence by just bee-ing.

Unfortunately, these life-giving bee-ings get a bad rap for the venomous sting they can inflict when they or their hive are being threatened. Yesterday, while drawing sand-art with driftwood sticks on the beach with my children, I stepped on one such bee.  Later my toes and foot ballooned as a result, humoring my children at the swollen sight. Most would quickly think, "oh no, poor foot!", not recognizing that my foot will heal in 3-5 days-time, and the venom coursing through my veins is actually a gift of higher magnitude; protecting my muscles, bones and joints from future degeneration.

The "victim" dwells on the sting. The "appreciator" receives the gift, an offering, a healing injection reminding that slowing the pace down a bit, putting one's feet up (literally), allows for necessary observation, special care of one's own bee-ing, and

acceptance of each of these unpredictable, hidden gifts of life.

The magnificent bee unfortunately received no such gift in return, but instead sacrificed its life when it was forced to sting in self-defense. It is with noble honor to receive the health benefitsfrom such a thankless sacrifice. This sentiment is for all the underappreciated pollinators and life-beings who bring health and life to all.

May we all Bee Kind, Bee brave, Bee strong, Beehave, and Bee grateful to just Bee. Each day is a gift. Bee the best YOU, you can Bee.

Ancient cultures around the world reveal their use of honey through story, myth, song, tradition and art. In fact, the term honeymoon, is rooted in the Persian cultural tradition of bestowing a newlywed couple with honey wine for one moon’s length of time to imbue them with fertility, abundance, health, and harmony.

On a molecular level, honey is highly antimicrobial, enzymatic, and soothing. It may be used to heal wounds, bed sores, ulcers, and infections. As the concentrated phytochemicals address unwanted pathogens, the rich vitamins, minerals, and enzymes soothe and expedite the healing of tissues.

Honey is also beneficial for harmonizing the body with the surrounding environment. By consuming honey, the body becomes acclimated and aligned to the subtle energies in existence. Honey is concentrated flower nectar, dosed with pollen, sap, and other potent natural substances. When used internally or externally, it enlivens our bodies with one of the most ancient energies of ambrosia.

Weight Loss, Knees, and Herbal Medicine

Weight Loss, Knees, and Herbal Medicine

Last week, a severely overweight gentleman came to the Tea Lanai and inquired about remedies for bad knees, an inflamed lower back, and potentially a slipped disc. He continued in more detail of how his x-rays clearly show degraded cartilage, making the bones rub together and causing agony as he moves through his daily life.

I asked the 6 foot man, who was in his 40s, how much he weighed. He told me that he weighed 240 pounds. I then immediately ran over to the nearby garden and grabbed a big garden pot and handed it to him. I asked him to hold it and not put it down, ever. I then asked him how much he thought it weighed, and he answered around 10 pounds. I then asked him about how much weight he thinks he needs to lose to get back into balance. He told me 40 to 50 pounds.

I asked him if we was getting tired holding the pot. He answered yes. I told him to imagine holding 4 large garden pots, weighing 40 pounds in total, and never putting them down, ever. Bringing the pots with him everywhere he went; holding the pots as he woke up and got out of bed; carrying them up flights of stairs, sleeping with them on top of him; sitting down while holding them; carrying this weight around and compounding his ever-deteriorating back and knee joints.

I explained to the man as he held the pot, of course the cartilage in his knees and spine are severely worn down. Of course his spine will start to curve and discs will be “slipped”. It seems to be a popular story of overweight “victims” blaming their knees, heart, hormones and/or back (to name a few). There is a sense of feeling let down by our own body.
But the truth is, there is nothing in this world that is originally designed to carry a specific amount of weight, that does not eventually break when required to carry excess weight. It is that simple. So many of today’s health issues center around the "failing" of a structure that was pushed past its capacity, around obesity and excess weight. There is no way around it. No surgeries, no radiation, and no drugs that can fix excess weight and obesity in a truly sustainable, transformative, and positive way, without suppressing the real issue of excess stagnant, toxic weight.

So what to do? This brings me to plant medicine and its powerful and unique ability to cleanse, detoxify, and alkalize the body. The herbs enter the body and immediately work to cleanse the body of harmful toxins. It is these harmful toxins that comprise the excess 40 pounds of weight. The herbs, however, literally scratch and claw at the toxic soup that we refer to as excess weight. This gnarly soup is typically and predominantly comprised of any dietary combination of thick mucus from dairy, toxic carcinogens from meat, synthetic chemicals from sugars, and sticky “glu”-ten from wheat that binds it all together so very effectively.

As the herbs scratch and claw at the cancerous, toxic soup, the body is able to release the acids through bathroom visits, as well as skin pores and potentially other valuable cleansing lessons. As the herbs alkalize the blood and remove the acidic toxins, the body, mind and spirit begin to consciously, as well as chemically, seek more and more healing foods that are alkaline in nature, promoting a more balanced lifestyle. The all-powerful herbs also call in the high quality spring water for hydration, as well as more and more restoration during the cleansing process.

Kauai Farmacy Teas, Superfoods, and Tinctures are all great for cleansing, detoxifying, reducing inflammation and alkalizing the body. I personally like the Puritea, Vitalitea and the Wellness Tea for cleansing and weight loss due to the circulating Noni Leaf, cleansing Soursop Leaf, metabolic Ginger Root and anti-inflammatory Turmeric Root. Drink these teas a few times a day, consistently over time, and the weight will undoubtedly begin to fall off.

I later explained to the man, as he continued to hold the garden pot, how he had to trust the process. As the
diet shifts, he would eventually be able to put the 4 garden pots down on the ground, one by one. And, once the weight falls away, he could allow the Comfrey plant to do its work to revitalize and regenerate the bones, cartilage, ligaments and tendons in the knee and spine.

The human body is so precious. Let’s do everything in our power to take care of it in every moment of every day; and trust that there are such simple answers to even our deepest pains. These herbs act as interceptors in our healing journey. They have the ability to literally intercept a fast moving train headed for surgery. Again, we must trust the process, trust the plants, and trust ourselves.

Endocrine Nutrition Expert, Magdalena Wszelaki, Shares Kauai Farmacy

"We introduced you to several teas and spice mixes from Kauai Farmacy a few months ago and that was a huge hit. So many of you have written that their products have made a big difference in your own health and life. Just as for many of you, their teas are part of my daily ritual; the Women's Wellness is my afternoon tea and Tulsi an evening cuppa.

Kauai Farmacy’s teas are not like anything else you have tried. Grown in a lush, tropical, biodynamic (which is superior to organic) farm in Kauai, their flavor, fragrance, nutritional density and energetic vibrations excel any other teas I’ve ever drank.
As much as I try to support local trade and food from your area, this is one of the few things that I make an exception for—just because of the quality and effect on your health.

Calming things down…

This time we decided to focus on their products that help you calm down during the day and at sleep better at night. I think we all need it to some extent right now; be it the life changes caused by Covid, many of you having kids at home 24/7 while maintaining full-time jobs, cancelled trips, shut down gyms and yoga studios, upcoming holidays and the looming question of what that would look like. The current political landscape is plagued by anger, division, half-truths in the mainstream media and social media are most certainly contributing to how many of us feel right now.

I thought it might be helpful to show you a few herbs in the form of tea and tinctures that are well known to calm the racing mind down and help you sleep better.

Tulsi Holy Basil Blend Tea: Known as an herbal adaptogen, tulsi literally helps us “adapt.” In our bodies, tulsi nourishes the adrenals, supporting our “fight or flight” responses, ability to react to stress, and hormonal regulation in the adrenal gland. It’s also revered for its immune-boosting properties. This floral-basil tea is simply divine.

Tranquility Tea: Passion flower (lilikoi) leads the nervines, sedatives and calming herbs in this blend, including lemon balm and vervain. I really am pleased this tea does not contain valerian, which is hit or miss for many.

Wellness Tea: In this full-bodied blend, noni leaf helps with pain relief, immunity, and digestion. Other key herbs include turmeric, tulsi, lemongrass, and galangal—perfect for lifting your spirits to combat cold, flu, allergies, and headaches.

Women's Wellness Tea: The key herb in this blend is chaste (vitex), known for restoring hormone balance in women. Chaste helps with progesterone production, and because progesterone is a calming hormone, it can aid restful sleep and ease anxiety. This tea blend also features herbs that help tone the uterus, build blood, promote circulation, support digestion, regulate water retention, encourage healthy liver functioning, and boost immunity. You’ll want to sip on this tea especially if you’re going through transitions like menstruation, fertility, postpartum, or menopause.

Love Potion Tea: Sweet, spicy, and mood-stimulating, this tea is an adaptogenic, antioxidant, and aphrodisiac experience. It is loaded with bio-active minerals, protein-packed raw cacao, circulatory herbs and three power-house adaptogens: tulsi, gotu kola, and ashwagandha.

Lemon Balm Tincture: This tincture is a major mood booster, thanks to lemon balm. This herb supports the nervous, digestive, cerebral, cardiovascular and reproductive systems. It’s especially good for naturally calming the nervous system. Lemon balm was a great herb for me personally in 2019. That year was actually harder for me than 2020, due to being in herbal school, business stressors, and caring for my two energetic pups. Lemon balm played a huge role in calming the negative chatter in my head.

Passion Flower (Lilikoi) Tincture: Passion flower is a soothing nervine and strong sedative. It’s wonderful for nerves, promoting sleep, and pain relief. It also contains chrysin, an aromatase inhibitor, that stops the conversion of testosterone into estrogen, which can help with estrogen dominance.

I hope you love these products as much as I have. They really are addictive in the most positive sense of this word!

I sat down with Kauai Farmacy founders Doug and Genna to discuss their biodynamic farm. It’s so lush and tranquil, and you’ll even catch a glimpse of it in the video.

"Kauai is a magical place. Called The Garden Island, the botanical diversity nearly assaults the senses (well, a New Yorker’s senses, anyway). It’s also home, on the West side of the island, to Monsanto headquarters, rendering this idyllic haven a kind of crucible of light and dark forces.

Doug is a former East Coaster who moved to Kauai to heal. And heal he did, with the help of plants from his Kauai backyard. Since then, he runs Kauai Farmacy, a medicinal herb farm that honors the land and its bounty, empowering the conscious farming movement.

I had the pleasure of visiting his farm where they speak to plants and harvest them with such care and passion, it’s become nearly impossible for me to drink heat-dried, stale tea bags ever since!

If you’ve been a patient, read my book, or joined our online tribe, you know how strongly I feel about hydration and about a month-long trial off of coffee (orally, anyway). Loose leaf teas are a perfect medicinal beverage to introduce you to the healing power of plants, lovingly grown and prepared, and to the power of therapeutic foods over supplements.

Their teas are beyond organic, hand picked, and low temp dehydrated. My faves are Women’s Wellness and Puritea which I drink after plane travel."

Kaua‘i Farmacy offers self-healing remedies made on Kaua’i

Kaua‘i Farmacy offers self-healing remedies made on Kaua’i

Doug and Genna Wolkon discovered intrinsic motivation by helping others navigate through a monetary system they felt didn’t for work them. Rather than trying to comply, the Wolkons took control of their healing remedies and transformed their passion into a business. The Wolkons, both originally from the Mainland who arrived in Kaua‘i over a decade ago, were unaware their healing journey would create an opportunity to educate and empower others into adopting a holistic lifestyle.

For the owners of a small acreage farm outside of Kilauea, called Kaua‘i Farmacy, it is like walking through nature’s medicine cabinet, which is congruent with one of their marketing mantras for their business to “heal yo’ self.” Consumers suffering from psychological or emotional attrition resulting from the fear of the unknown driven by mainstream media coverage will now be presented with options to change their lifestyle at Kaua‘i Farmacy. According to the Wolkons, it is not just about the food you consume, adopting the lifestyle is about resetting your mentality.

“Kaua‘i certainly has the opportunity to embrace this health and wellness lifestyle that is derived on-farm through an agricultural community,” Doug Wolkon said. “This is a lifestyle of plants and people working together to create vitality, and optimal health and wellness.”

They built their business model on the philosophical wisdom of Hawaiian La‘au Lapa‘au, Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, and tribal ingredients. The Wolkons use cultivation techniques in their brewery which offers 80 varieties of organic, healing plants from food orchards. Their small farm includes honey bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, along with wildfowl. Their farm also includes no imports. Everything at Kaua‘i Farmacy is made and cultivated on their farm.

Kauai Farmacy’s Ikona Fernandez is harvesting Bele Spinach to feed the leaves to the worms to create compost for the gardens Tuesday afternoon at Kaua’i Farmacy. Fernandez is one of 17 employees at the Farmacy.

Pressing the reset button.

The Wolkons hope consumers don’t attempt to change their lifestyle out of fear of contracting COVID-19 because they feel people changing their lifestyle, for this reason, will be short-lived. They hope consumers come to their farm wanting to modify their lifestyle away from a more synthetic society to which many people throughout the country have become accustomed. Genna views that with the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone in the world is forcing a shift in this mentality. According to the Wolkons, people need to make a change, and that lifestyle change will be permanent.

“I think we have to shift our mindset, and it’s going to take something of the magnitude of the pandemic to do that,” Genna said. “I am embracing this as a transitional time for the community, the economy, everything. The (natural) medicine is meant to give us energy, give us life force, give us the ability to feed ourselves, and the potential to have the performance our bodies are meant to have.”

Kaua’i Farmacy employee Marc Fullbright organizes the multitude of herbal teas they manufacture Tuesday afternoon at Kaua’i Farmacy.

Fear of the unknown.

The Wolkons feel the economic infrastructure has created a society predicated on fear.

“There is fear-based pandemonium, and that is fragile because when people get into this fear-based mentality, they tend to fall into a victim state ‘I am broken, I need to fix it,’” Genna said. “They also think that someone else is going to tell them what to do versus tapping into what we need to do. We must remember we have the empowerment to self-heal and help better our situation,” Genna said.

Nature’s gift.

Doug Wolkon remains passionately adamant about driving home his company’s mission statement in offering healing remedies not available in your local grocery store. This isn’t just a business to the Wolkons. The herbal, holistic, and natural healing lifestyle has become a passion which is the true driving force behind their business, not the other way around.

“The thing about plants is that they give us information, and with all of the confusion that is happening right now, the truth has a way of finding its way to the surface,” Doug said.

According to Doug, when the truth emerges it allows consumers an opportunity to become empowered. “What we eat, drink and consume are mother nature’s plants and they help us find the truth,” he said. “They create self-awareness to help us empower our immune system.”

Kaua’i Farmacy owner Genna Wolkon inspects the Vitex Castus flower grown in the field at Kaua’i Farmacy Tuesday afternoon. These plants are known for balancing women’s hormones.

Let the plants do the work.

The variety of herbal medicines the Wolkons suggest will not always be the same for each consumer. Based on several different variables, the consumer will use medicines based on their stress and emotional regulation. They may have to constantly alter their rotation of herbal remedies based on their changing needs. “I always tell people that are new to us they need to have the plants come and do the work,” Doug said. “So often we find ourselves trying to convince and arguing about which way is healthier and which diet is better. The plants give you the answer and resurrect your intuition.”

Doug feels Kaua’i Farmacy could lead the way for consumers looking to find the right combination of herbal remedies. “You have to figure out the diet and lifestyle, and what is the answer for them, and then show them how this worked for me,” Doug said.

“We need to exemplify our responsibility as a group of people that live this lifestyle and how it worked for us. We live in harmony, and we need to let the people see which products work for them.”

Doug knows that during this COVID-19 pandemic, people have to make the adaption and not live in constant fear. The Kaua’i Farmacy YouTube channel allows a vehicle to make that transition happen by educating people around the world about their lifestyle.

“This is about marrying your lifestyle, which is a celebration of the herbal lifestyle, with real-time gardening and farming connecting the people to the land and community,” Doug said. For more information, you can go to kauaifarmacy.com

Venomous Bite in the Name of Science

Venomous Bite in the Name of Science

Check out our latest Farm-to-Film episode capturing a live centipede bite and
treatment in the name of experiential science!

Remember the days of frontier science and medicine, when explorers curious of the natural world would experiment with their elixirs on themselves? At Kauai Farmacy, we like to keep that ingenuitive spirit alive by testing remedies in real time. Call it “old school research & design,” “radical quality control,” or the “heal yo' self revival.”

In this video, part of our farm-to-film series, we experiment with Mulberry Leaf’s medicinal qualities in treating centipede bites. If you live close to nature in Hawaii you probably know about the centipedes, but if you don’t and haven’t heard of them before, they are pretty gnarly, yet graceful creatures. While we extensively practice self-healing methods, it is always with an educated foundation: Centipede bites can be extremely painful, but they are not deadly to humans, and according to Chinese Herbal Medicine, the juice of a Mulberry Leaf is an effective treatment for the venomous bites. This knowledge, along with a personal account of Mulberry’s efficacy, led our friend, coconut climber and daily encounterer of centipedes, to seek an answer to the question, “Does Mulberry Leaf REALLY help treat centipede bites?” Watch the video to find out.

The greater story of this use of herbal medicine is that there are so many ways that plants can help us! From reducing inflammation, mending broken bones, relieving chronic back pain, balancing hormones, to fighting tumors, and treating venomous bites, herbs truly ally us in every way. After all, our human organism has lived in communion with plants for countless generations; the wisdom of this harmony is in our DNA.

To learn more about the myriad of ways that plants directly contribute to our health, Subscribe to our YouTube channel for a close-up look into our gardens, apothecary, and medicinal experiments. Note* Most videos do not involve creepy crawlers, but all include equally profound healing herbs.

The Essence of Immunity

The Essence of Immunity

Turmeric harvest - Curcuma Longa (aka 'Olena in Hawaiian)

Doug Wolkon harvesting cuban oreganoWhen I think of dis-ease or illness, or more precisely, the thousands of terms Western medicine has created for defining symptoms of dis-ease, I can not help but feel somewhat curious and simultaneously compassionate. In my opinion, it is the unhealthy food, stressful lifestyles, chlorinated water and polluted air that is creating dis-ease. The complexity of pollution and toxicity that surrounds us on the daily, from the air we breathe to the food we eat, is wreaking havoc on our bodies, minds, and spirits. Mix these noxious inputs with fearful thoughts from panicked media, and we have created the perfect recipe for dis-ease.

Even most people that eat “healthy” cannot typically trace their food or medicine back to the origin of its growth. Therein, they will never know how the food is cared for, loved, fertilized, or how fresh it truly is. These elements are essential to the true vitality and digestibility of the energy we are receiving. It is so simple, yet so elusive in society. Clean food, clean water, and clean air create healthy human beings.

So what does all this have to do with Immunity?

I do not worry about disease because doing so gets in the way of building the health of my immune system. My truth is that I actually don’t really believe in disease. Why? Because a belief in disease hinders the refined focus necessary to produce a strong immune system. Believing in disease, or even sickness for that matter, is a fear-driven concept that typically allows the patient to play ignorant victim, instead of owning their actions (i.e. lack of rest, toxic water or poor diet choices are the top reasons).

Disease actually refutes my most basic belief in the health of all human beings: "clean air, water, and food, combined with rest, can diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease".

I believe that if my immune system is strong enough, then I will not know dis-ease. And if I do go down for a “lesson in healing”, I will not wonder why, because my immune system will clearly diagnose the reason for me, which is usually rooted in the basic balance of clean nutrition, hydration and rest.

Plants parallel humans in the potency of their immune systems. Dis-ease cannot and will not penetrate the immunity of plants that are fed nourishing compost, cared for with love, and receive abundant clean water. The only real difference between the immune systems of plants and human beings is that plants are full-on ninjas at the most important healing practice: rest.

In any case, even if we ignite our individual immune systems optimally, we are still only as strong as the immune system of the environment we live in. Unfortunately, we have created homogeneous industrial environments that are imbalanced on myriad levels. This needs to change as well. And the necessary change is easy and attainable: "Plant diverse medicine gardens anywhere and everywhere to clarify and bolster the immune systems of our collective environments".

Again, no need to fear the pollution in the air, but rather find comfort in the thriving TURMERIC, ROSEMARY, YARROW, LAVENDER and SAGE growing all around you. For, it is these very plant medicines that clean the air and call in the cleansing rain, just like they do in our bodies.

We must propel our local farmers and plant medicine makers to keep the produce coming. Grow food and medicinal herbs to strengthen our human and environmental immune systems with such vigor and radiance that dis-ease becomes irrelevant. Retrain our minds to perceive the very nutrients within our gardens that enrich our plants simultaneously elevating our minds, bodies, and souls. This will be easy, once the abundance is a reality. However, there is no quick fix to dismantling the concept of dis-ease. There is only the natural process of diligently planting a true foundation of health and wellness centered around caring for the earth as it cares for us; and as its immune system strengthens so does ours. This is the essence of Immunity!
